Hardy was part of the English naturalist movement. He wrote short stories, novels and poetry. First published in 1874 this fourth novel of Nardy's was his first literary success. Gabriel Oak is a sheep farmer who through frugal living has saved enough money to start his own farm. He falls in love with a newcomer, the vain Bathsheba. After his new sheep dog runs his flock off of a cliff Gabriel is penniless and must find work. His new job finds him working near Bathsheba and when her flock is in trouble he is the one she is forced to turn to for help.
